Floodplain Management

Washington County residents need look no further than recent history to understand that flooding impacts a significant part of our community. In an effort to best manage the effects of floods, regulate use of the floodplain and to ensure that residents can obtain flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program, the Board of Supervisors adopted the Washington County Floodplain Management Ordinance.

Floodplain Administrator
A Floodplain Administrator has the responsibility for working with the ordinance and assuring that all development in the floodplain is in accordance with the regulations after applicants have obtained the appropriate permits.

Floodplain Maps
In 2012, FEMA finalized the Countywide Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) for Washington County with an effective date of January 16, 2013. Each of the map files contains a FIRM Panel. The Map Index can be opened as a TIF file to help you locate the appropriate panel number.

Important: The Washington County GIS page provides current high resolution, full-color aerial photography, parcel shape and flood map data. This interactive format is generally more useful for property owners and third party agents who need to determine if a structure is in the floodplain or not.
