[ARCHIVED] SCAM ALERT: Phone Scam

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office is warning citizens of Washington County of a new scam that is targeting our area. The caller claims they are from Publishers Clearing House and advises subjects that they have won a large prize – possibly even a new automobile. They ask the recipient to go to Western Union and send approximately $300 to them for processing fees. Legitimate organizations will not ask you to send money up front to win a prize. Law Enforcement officials urge citizens not to provide any personal information and not to send any funds. If you have received such a call you are urged to report it to the Sheriff’s Office or Police Department at 319-653-2107.
