Functions of Your County Attorney:
Your County Attorney is the legal adviser and chief law enforcement officer for your county. The Washington County Attorney's Office is responsible for prosecuting state criminal misdemeanors and felonies that occur in Washington County. It is also responsible for enforcing county ordinances and other state laws that apply to Washington County.
The County Attorney DOES:
Prosecute violations of state criminal laws and county ordinances.
Provide legal advice to the Board of Supervisors and county and township officers concerning county matters.
Represent and defend the state, county and its officers in officially related cases where no conflict exists.
Recover all monies (debts, fines, penalties, etc.) owing to the state or county.
We participate in the collections program. Any person with delinquent fines interested in a payment plan should fill out a financial affidavit and return it to the County Attorney's office at 222 W Main Street, PO Box 841, Washington, IA 52353 or via fax or email at 319-653-7784 / jorourke@co.washington.ia.us.
Present all mental health commitment proceedings and all juvenile delinquency and child in need of assistance cases.
The Washington County Attorney is a full time County Attorney and DOES NOT:
Give legal advice to or represent private groups or persons.
File lawsuits for private persons or defend them against lawsuits, including actions for dissolution of marriage and landlord-tenant disputes.
Prepare wills, deeds or other legal documents for private individuals.

The IowaVINE system is a service through which victims of crime can use the telephone or internet to search for information regarding the custody status of their offender and to register to receive telephone and email notification when the offender's custody status changes. The toll-free number for IowaVINE is 888-7-IAVINE or 888-742-8463. This service is provided to assist victims of crime who have a right to know about their offender's custody status.
